Our History

Timeline of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee Since 1917

Picture a time, not too long after the turn of the 20th century, when the trade in jewelry and timepieces still clustered around Maiden Lane in lower New York, near Wall Street. It’s the Progressive Era, when there is a movement across the land to promote equal competition for the advantage of legitimate competitors. The Progressives, among other causes, argue that there’s a need for government regulation of business practices to ensure competition and free enterprise.

The U.S. government had just created the Federal Trade Commission to foster honest business practices and robust competition in the marketplace, while protecting consumers from what were then called “sharp” practices That’s the historical context in which the Jewelers Vigilance Committee was born. Due to some visionary industry leaders interested in keeping the marketing and selling of jewelry fair and honest, they decided to band together and speak with one voice. Their initial greatest concern was that shoddy practices in the marking of platinum, gold, and silver products were hurting the reputation of fine jewelry sales. This history starts with a brief look at the events leading up to JVC’s formation, then provides a timeline of the association’s key actions over 100 years.
